The Proposal Department is part of Bechtel’s Business Development Group. We prepare, print, and deliver materials that win jobs, demonstrating the company’s experience, financial strength, technical and management expertise, and suitability for a given project while differentiating the company from our competitors.
We are looking for a Writer / Editor / Corporate Journalist to assist the current five-strong team in producing brochures, presentations, proposals, and related marketing and business-development materials.
The successful candidate
You will be a skilled communications professional, a team player and a quick study, with a full range of editorial skills:
§ A degree in relevant discipline (English, journalism, corporate communications, e.g.)
§ Highest level of writing, editing, proofreading ability in UK and US English
§ High-level ability in MS Word; good ability in Excel. Some ability in InDesign would be a plus
§ Quick and sure grasp of technical information
§ Ability to make technical, commercial, and any/all information understandable to varied readerships
§ Demonstrated interviewing experience
§ Work as part of a team and independently
§ Understand document production process and players, and the role of the writer-editor within it
§ Work under pressure with firm deadlines and shifting priorities.
The role comprises all editorial skills necessary for document generation and production to final submittal/printing, from rewriting/repurposing to editing to formatting and developing new material.
With minimal supervision, you will be expected to research, outline, organize, write, edit, format, review, correct, and/or finalize documents that include proposals, marcoms, and technical reports.
You will be a self-starter, able to work in fast-paced environment, able to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, multiple tasks, and shifting priorities. You are also meticulous, detail oriented, conscientious, and organised.
Specific skills and tasks
§ See that content meets the client, RFP, and other criteria
§ Edit, check, and rewrite the work of subject matter experts, and confident to go back to them if something requires clarification
§ Compile and logically organize content to be included in documents
§ Assist in the final preparation for print of documents, ensuring that the material meets the client/requestor requirements, is structured and formatted logically, and that issues, inconsistencies, and other problems are resolved
§ Generate document templates
§ Trouble shoot and fix corrupt or difficult documents
§ Organise and maintain document and resource files
§ Attend training as necessary and as time allows
§ Accept individual responsibility and accountability.
Education and qualifications
§ Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in English, journalism, communications, or other relevant field. Experience in megaproject engineering/design/construction industry would be a plus.
§ Minimum of 10 years of relevant and progressively responsible editorial experience (marketing and/or technical writing and editing)
§ Proficient in the Microsoft Suite, including Word, Outlook, and Excel
§ Hands-on familiarity with Adobe InDesign would be an advantage.
What you bring
§ Confident and in-depth working knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, composition, and style, including distinctions between US and UK English.
§ Ability to perform substantive edits and write original text.
§ Ability to understand or quickly gain understanding of technical terminology related to major rail, airport, infrastructure, ports/harbours, and other company projects and segments.
§ Ability to interpret information from subject matter experts in order to edit/rewrite/write documents.
§ Excellent oral and written communication skills and be comfortable communicating at all levels with management and colleagues.
